Although single-ply membrane roofing systems constitute the majority of roofs installed today, the technology that has resulted in such popularity is in some instances decades old. Many materials and installation techniques were developed and refined in Europe prior to making an appearance in the U.S. marketplace.
There are two basic groups of single-ply products:
- Vulcanized elastomers such as ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) or "rubber" and neoprene. EPDM is available in black or white.
- Thermoplastics such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO), available in white and some other colors.
The methods of securement of these systems range from ballasted to mechanically attached to totally adhered. Seams can be taped, glued, heat-welded, solvent welded, and mechanically fastened to provide a strong, watertight monolithic system.
The many available options can cover a variety of requirements and Olsson Roofing is very well versed in assisting our customers in determining the appropriate system to service their needs. We try to look at the requirements the facility places on the roof before determining which system may be the most durable and cost effective.
