Ford Motor Chicago Stamping Plant
Chicago Heights, IL

1,800,000 Square Feet
Complete Tear-Off and Replacement
Conventional 4-ply B.U.R. over Insulation

After 39 years, the time had finally come to replace the existing coal tar based built-up roof at Ford Motor’s Chicago Stamping Plant in Chicago Heights, Illinois. With millions of dollars worth of equipment and inventory to protect, Ford Motor Company determined that they could not afford to experiment with any roof system other than a conventional built-up roof. While the existing roof was coal tar-based, the existing slope in the deck suggested that an asphalt based fiberglass reinforced system would perform equally well as its predecessor at a lower cost thus stretching the budget to cover more plant area. Ford chose Schuller’s BUR specification 4GIG using two layers of insulation followed by the application of four plies of Type IV fiberglass felts and gravel surfacing as the most appropriate system for their facility.

Over 500,000 square feet of roofing along with deck repairs were completed with zero accidents and disruption to the Ford production line - an example of customer and contractor working closely to deliver value and quality.
